Help!!!!! my Pullet layed her first egg it was soft shelled and open ended now she is acting punky and not right not right???
It all started while I was outside doing chores, she was acting weird and standing alone as if in a trance so I picked her up and put her in the coop, she came out walked around abit and just stood there blank wings out panting a bit, so I put her back in the coop again and next thing she is in nest box fussing around steps out and plops out a deformed soft shelled egg, now she is acting weird still ate a tiny bit took a couple slugs of water and is just standing around in a trance???? should I DO ANYTHING FOR HER? This was her very first egg at 18 weeks old, and she is just standing by herself next to the fence not doing anything???

open ended egg???

here it is next to reg egg?

Poor Frankie tail down just standing around barley coherent?

I have never seen a deformed egg like that...

Do you have oyster shell out as a calcium supplement for the birds to eat?

Yes i have been sprinkling oyster shells in the coop and scratch spot in the old garden where they hang out for the last month or so.

I am still working on the last bag of chick crumbles but instead of giving them scratch grain for treats as usual, the past week I introduced layer pellets as a treat instead because I am getting 4 pullets squatting pretty frequently?

Just this morning I borrowed somebodies idea from chicken ventions thread....to take an old tuna can and nail it to the outside run twoxfour frame and filled it with the oyster shells, so i think they are ok on calcium?

I am wondering does anybody have info on ACV leaching calcium from the pullets system? I haven't been giving very often but the waterers where getting a bit slimey last week so three days I added ACV??

Just wondering if anyone with lots of experience thinks this egg is not unusual for a first egg?

Glad to report Frankie is acting a bit more perky(not totally right) but went up with the other ladies to roost so we'll check her in the morning, she is 17 weeks 6 days old today?

Yes, lets hope for a normal egg today...let us know! I have my oyster shell in a pan in the coop next to their feeder. I don't know much about the ACV thing, I just put some in my waterers for the first time last week....maybe this is just a fluke egg...yesterday, I got an egg the size of half your thumb! I poke holes in the top and bottom and it did not contain a yolk...I am keeping it just as a conversation piece. Don't know who layed it though...hoping for a bigger egg. But hey, gotta start somewhere! Let us know how Frankie does!

You know as I was leaving the site I was thinking about what you wrote about ACV interferring with calcium. Have you ever done the experiment where you put an egg into a container of vinegar for days and the vinegar eats away at the shell and all you have left is a rubbery egg? That came to my mind. You may be right about the ACV doing that. I am gonna switch out using the ACV every other time I water just as a preventive. You may be onto something!!! Great thinking!!!! Chickens love ACV and will really take to it, so it may be your problem....
