Hi
I have a 1.5 year old bantam rooster in Florida who is breathing with his mouth open. He has been sick for about a month. I took him to the vet two weeks ago and they did a fecal float and found out he had coccidia and worms. The vet gave him Panacur liquid and I treated him and the rest of the flock with Corrid and then Safeguard when I got home. They said his heart and lungs sounded great. He isn't moving around a lot but eats everything I bring him. His comb and face is pale and his legs seem weak. He fell over yesterday and couldn't get up on his own.

  • What is the behavior, exactly – Heavy open mouth breathing all of a sudden started like 15 min ago... now less heavy but like short inhales with mouth open.
  • What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. He has been eating his regular food along with some eggs raw tomatoes and watermelon.
  • How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. His poop is very runny, greenish with a little bit of white.
  • What has been the treatment you have administered so far? Poultry Cell and B12+Vit K
  • What is your intent as far as treatment? I want to keep him stable until his vet appointment on Tuesday (they are closed for the holiday)
  • Describe the housing/bedding in use – he is living in my bathroom with a area to walk around and a hard shell crate with a nesting pad
  • The rest of the flock seems fine.
I really appreciate your help!

How much does he weigh? How many days and what dosage did you use of the SafeGuard and Panacur? Did you shake the bottle well (if it was the suspension?) Capillary and gapeworms can be treated with 10% fenbendazole either SafeGuard or Panacur at a dosage of 1/4 ml (0.23% ml) per pound of weight given orally for 5 consecutive days.

How much was the dosage of Corid? We usually suggest using 2 tsp of the liquid Corid or 1.5 ml of the powder per gallon of water for 5 days. B vitamins or thiamine which is in Poultry Cell should not be given until Corid is finished.

Have you added any new birds to your flock before he started getting sick? Do you see anything inside his beak? Has he had any head shaking, mucus from his beak or nostrils, or watery/bubbly eyes? Does he have any lice or mites on his body? How warm is the room? Has he had any visits with his flock members?

He only weighs about 1.5lbs right now. The vet gave him the Panacur..the bill says .73 so I'm thinking it was almost one ml.

For the Corid I only mixed one tsp of the liquid per gallon of water for 5 days for the whole flock.

I mixed .78ml of the safeguard with 8 cups of water for him and the rest of the flock. I started the poultry cell a little while after when I noticed he wasn't getting better.

No new birds. I looked in his mouth and didn't see anything. His mouth looks a little slimy so maybe that's mucus. His eyes are normal. No mites or lice. His head looks a little shaky when i pick him up. The room is prob like 75 degrees, and i have a little fan in there. Yes, I am letting him visit with some of the hens.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and help me!
