One thing about pointed hackle feathers - I thought my 8-week old EE pullet might be a male for a variety of reasons, one of which is that I thought her hackle feathers were pointed. A helpful (and experienced!) poster kindly pointed out that although there was a pattern on the feather that was posted, the feather itself was rounded.
So if you think you see pointy feathers, check for pattern vs. actual outline of the feather! My photo editor is on semi-strike, and it's only in black, but here's what you look for (there's a black outline added by me around the edge of the feather):
