so we had a hen that just died. We don’t know exactly what happened so I’m looking for some help! She was breathing a little raggedy yesterday but was still very active. Today we went to go close the coop up and they all went in except for her. She laid still and didn’t get up to go. My husband went to get closer and she got up and walked to his feet and laid down. He grabbed her up and brought her to the house and just kind of let her lay in his lap. Her breathing was pretty labored ( she sounded like an asthmatic!) she had clear liquid coming out of her mouth and sneezed a few times. So we secluded her in a small pen, cake inside to eat dinner and after we were done we went to check on her and she was dead. Anyone have any ideas on what caused it and if I should be concerned for my other chickens? Anything helps!! Thanks!!

Sometimes one bird has a respiratory issue, and it's limited to the one bird. Keep an eye on the rest for similar signs. If you want to know exactly why she died you would need to send her in for testing.

Sorry you lost her.

Thank you! I was thinking it was a possible respiratory issue but it happened so quick I was also thinking maybe a snake bite but I didn’t see any marks on her. Thank you for your help!

Chickens hide illness very well, so often you don't notice until they are really sick or have passed.

If you are where it's hot and humid it may have caused pneumonia to develop. There are some contagious respiratory diseases, but usually you will see multiple ill birds.

yeah I’m in Oklahoma and the humidity on top of this heat is MISERABLE this year. I’ll def keep an eye out on the rest of them!

That happened to one of my hens once. I still have no clue what happened. I'm so sorry about your hen dying though :(:(:(

It didn't spread to any other birds of mine as far as I know. It happened so quickly that I don't think it was actually able to spread. But I could be wrong. This happened in March of last year. I haven't seen any of my other birds act strange.
