3/15 silkies hatched yesterday and today. I moved the momma hen inside, nice set up. She has been a good momma today teaching chicks to eat, drink and keeping them in line and tucking them under her wing abs keeping eggs underneath. However, tonight I think she’s started tapping/pecking at eggs underneath her. She’s black and it’s hard to see exactly what’s happening but I hear her tapping rapidly. Should I move her off the nest and take a look for holes/cracks? The pecking is intermittent but she keeps going back to it. ???

You can take a peep if your concerned, do you have a back up incubator?
Update- she’s not pecking at the eggs it’s her own feathers. Upon inspection, she has mites! Brooder set up was perfect environment for them to multiply, poor Mamma. Of course her skin in black but her feathers are also black- which makes it real hard to see these slow movers. So, I am off to my local store. Plan is to:
•bath her in Adams
•blow her dry
•spray her and chicks with some sort of mite spray
