Hello!!! I have a red sex link that has just started joining the others in the laying trend, the problem is when she lays she gets really puffed up and will lay 2-3 soft eggs within about an hour of each other, once she lays she stands over or close to them in a guarding manner. Is this something I should be concerned about? They do get oyster shells. All of my others have had no problems with laying normal eggs, She is the last one to start and I am just concerned.

It’s interesting how the same general type of question often shows up in several threads at the same time. I see that happening a lot. Check out my response in this thread. I think it applies to your post.

She may just need a few days to work the kinks out of her system. If she persists for more than two weeks it is an individual hen problem. She is releasing too many yolks and the shell gland does not make enough shell material to cover all of them.

Good luck!

Seasonal......all those 'new chick' questions from spring are turning into 'new layer' questions now.

It’s more specific than that Aart though I agree it is often seasonal so there can be some pattern to it. Today it’s soft-shelled eggs and such. Some days it’s specific questions on molting, elevated versus on the ground coops, separating a broody hen while hatching, when can you integrate a broody and her chicks, ventilation, electric netting, will a rooster kill chicks, why is my EE laying brown eggs, just all over the board and often quite specific. Maybe it’s just me noticing a pattern that’s not really there.

If it is happening there is nothing wrong with it, it’s perfectly normal and natural, there are questions these people should be asking. I’m certainly not complaining, just commenting.

CKeough, sorry about hijacking your thread on this side conversation. Her laying two or three soft shelled eggs like that should be worrying. It’s possible it is something she straighten out in time, sure hope so, but it is also possible she won’t. I do wish you luck.
