It couldn't hurt to give it a try if you think she has an infection of sorts. Keep us posted on how she's doing. Hope everything works out alright. God bless

You can do the ampicillin or any antibiotic you want, it can't hurt and may help. Along with the vitamins give her a good probiotic and maybe wet some of the feed or put the food you've been giving her into a blender to make a mash. Eight years old is a long time and I would be feeling the same way you are! Unfortunately, if that is what it is there isn't a darned thing you can do except offer the support medications. Antibiotics, probiotics and vitamins will all help but it will not turn back the clock. Try the probiotics, if anything can make a difference it will be them and the vitamins already mentioned. Only other things I can think of is giving a baby aspirin 2Xs a day in a quart of water. She may have aches and pains like the rest of us do. Or, you could give her some flat beer. No bubbles please! Maybe 2 tbls. at a time if she will drink it, 2-3 times a day. The idea behind this is to increase her appetite and the alcohol in the beer will have a mild seditive affect on her and possibly get rid of any pain she may be having. An old, 90's and still going, country Vet told me this. I trust this man's opinion after the amount of time he has put into taking care of animals, chickens included.I am running out of options and getting desperate, I was told to give my silky a very small dose of ampicillin just in case she has an infection. Could this help or will it make her worst? please help!
Thank you for your reply and advice. She has her mouth wide open gasping for air this morning. I fed her some water and will try mashing some food for her. Hopefully she can make it thru the day.You can do the ampicillin or any antibiotic you want, it can't hurt and may help. Get her on an antibiotic as well. Seriously, as hard as it is for me to write this and for you to read this, it may be the end for her. She's lived a long life with wonderful care from you and I know a lot of love dished up with that. I would still be doing everything I could to make a miracle happen though, but that's me. This is your crossing of the road with your chicken. You have to ultimately make the decision on the treatment you think is right for your girl. I can't even begin to tell you how saddened I am that she is facing this at her age. Nor can I even begin to express how I feel for you with trying to do the right thing for your friend. I have not had the pleasure of a relationship with any of my birds for that long.Thank you for your reply and advice. She has her mouth wide open gasping for air this morning. And thanks to everyone in this thread that offered their support and advice. Its nice to see their are people who care for animals as much as we do.Get her on an antibiotic as well. If it were me, again, I would get some vitamins into her as well as the probiotic. Let me say this...she knows she is loved and cared for in a way that most birds dream about. I have eyes, toes and fingers crossed for you and your girl right now, and am praying for one of those little miracles we see every once in a while. Keep the faith and do all you are able to do, she may surprize us all and go on to be 15 years old! My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours!
I am sorry you lost her.PB passed away today at 2:17pm. Again thank you all for your advice and support. God Bless.
