In February, our TSC had a bin of chicks labeled "Mottled Javas" - we bought all that was left, which was 10. One of them was obviously a rooster a couple of weeks later, so we thought the rest must be pullets.

We couldn't understand why he was so much smaller than some of the pullets, if they were all javas... now, 4 mos later, we realize he is actually an Ancona rooster and at least two of our Java "girls" are actually boys.

Now we're not sure which pullets are javas and which are Anconas. None of them are to standard for either breed, so that doesn't help. Any thoughts on these as to gender or breed is appreciated! (And ignore our sex links, we know what they are ;0)

- Bertha/Bert - We're thinking Java rooster?

- Stumble. Has had a hard go of it, we had to nurse her back to health and then she hurt her wing... but she's big, so maybe Java pullet?

- This one looks almost identical to Bert, so maybe another roo?

- Java pullet?

- Far right is Bert. The two on the left are pullets but Ancona or Java?

- Bert's twin and ???

- Front view of Stumble

We have two more that look like the black ones in the picture with Bert except their a lot smaller and their earlobes are pink instead of the red that most of the "javas" have. Maybe Ancona? I'll try to get a pic tonight.

I agree with chippysmom on the sexes. I think they are all mottled java, they just need to grow into it, most hatchery chicks/farm supply chicks aren't very close to the standard :(. All nice healthy, happy looking chickens though. They even have a swimming pool with a a slide!! :)
