I am going to hatch chicken eggs soon and I’m wondering what breed I should get. Buff Orpingtons are wonderful so are Austrolopes, I need high layers, that are less broody, more laid back so I'm open to suggestions. Maybe a barnevelder? Even though they are lower layers they look cute lol, I am kind of a chicken "collector" so I already have a Plymouth, light Brahama, white Cochin and a speckled Sussex so anything but those breeds I'm open to looking at. Any suggestions? Thank you guys!

I have four Buff Orpington hens that are 9 months old. We are getting three eggs a day most days through these cold winter Indiana months! I can't say much about broodiness since I don't expect to see that until spring. Hopefully it's not a problem! They are calm and sweet. They also tolerate the cold very well so not sure where you live but this is a huge plus for me.

If you want less broody, you would probably not want to wander into the beloved Buff Orpingtons since they do tend to go broody.... at least old stock does. I had Barnevelders for a short while and let them go to focus on fewer breeds but really loved my last hen and will enter the Barnevlelder world again when I'm prepared to add another breed. Dark colored eggs, some with very light speckling. Calm and graceful.

I have golden comets and they lay an egg almost every day. They are awesome! I recommend them or austrolopes.

Have you thought about maybe finding a breeder that sells eggs from multiple breeds and having them send you a mixed dozen? Not like mixed breed but like 3 from one type 3 from another, and so on. That's what we're doing for our easter hatch. We just want different breeds for our main flock. We love different but want to keep them more productive breeds. If you're doing that you may be at the mercy of who you can find that has a lot of breeds
