I was crushed yesterday when several people told me my buff orpington roo is not in fact a buff orpington. I have roamed the internet looking for pictures to figure out exactly what he is. I have been told RIR/orpington mix, but I don't see any RIR in him other than darker color, but the markings don't match up. The markings resemble americana (sp) more, except he has yellow legs which suggest buff barred. But none match quite right. I'm very frustrated because I was going to sell chicks next year.

I bought him at a feed store. he looked exactly like the orpington hen chicks, except he had a black dot near his eye. I didn't want a roo, but my son talked me into it. Now everyone in the house has gotten excited about having chicks next year. I can't have 2 roosters and this roo is a pet. It is so frustrating. I told my son the roo would find a new home if he was mean. I don't think he would understand getting rid of him because he is different.

He is the one with the darker head at the bottom.

Yes, chickens that turn out dark can begin surprisingly light! Mine did, and they are now a pretty dark red.
