I'm new to this whole chicken business...my chicks are about 10 days old. Got them from McMurray last week. They are all eating and drinking well, very active, hopping around and now trying to fly a bit even. I couldn't tell there was anything wrong with any of them until I picked up my Ameraucana/EE Sadie. I always pet their chests when I hold them so they begin to warm up to me and be socialized. But this afternoon, I noticed Sadie had this giant hard lump on her throat/chest...like an oversized adam's apple!!! Is this normal??? I checked on some of my other chicks, and the other EE has a smaller one, and the Rocks, Buff Orps, and Aussies have the teeniest bump, but it's nothing compared to Sadie's. Her's is huge and hard, easily the size of a nickle. Is this a tumor? Can they develop them so fast? I only feed them organic chick starter, and some yogurt to help with pasty butts (which are cleared up). Even the filtered water that we drink. What is it??? Help!!

There are no silly questions. We all had to learn at one time or another. The crop is part of the digestive tract. You can find more information here:

Well, thank you guys so much for the responses...what a relief!! I'll keep an eye on it now that I'm aware that it's a normal thing. Dang, it's like being a new mom - I'm learning something new every single day!

Thank you everyone

The fact that it is really hard...could it be compacted? I am new but I have heard other chickens lovers on hear say something about a compacted crop being hard? Just a thought for an expert to either correct or confirm!

Probably not in a chick, but if you think it might be just take the food out overnight and check in the morning. If it's gone down she's fine and if not it may be impacted. If you do that though make sure you're there bright and early in the morning to put the food back in. They're growing fast right now and need their calories.

Thanks for all your help everyone! Luckily it cleared up and Sadie is back to normal. Which is eating and pooping a lot
