Does anybody know what color egg a Golden Comet lays?(I'm pretty sure brown) I got my first (non-Silkie) egg this morning from my LF coop, and its green. I have a Barred Rock (brown egg), a Black Sex Link (brown egg), a White Rock (brown egg, I think), a Golden Comet(??), and a Mallard hen(??). I am trying to figure out who layed their first egg this morning and I am pretty certain it is either the GC or the Mallard. But I thought that Malards layed clutches at a time and were seasonal and only laid in the spring, but of course I may be wrong. Any ideas?

Boy! That is a mystery! The mallard maybe?

My Golden Comets lay very large, dark brown eggs, so I'm certain the green egg did not come from yours if it hasn't been crossed with anything else.

As far as I know all my gals are pure bred, and look like they are. I just never seen a duck egg before, and like I said, I also thought they laid clutches in the spring. Not just a single egg. Also... Don't ducks require a drake (unlike chickens) to lay?

Yet, another good question! I am clueless when it comes to ducks, so can't help you there. Sorry.

It was the mallard - normally, she'll lay an egg every day or two til the clutch is finished, but if she's just starting to lay, it could be sporadic and off season.

Oh, and no drake necessary...
