Good evening,
My first hatch. Local eggs from 25 miles away which I picked up. Today 6/11 is day 20 in the incubator, 1 bird zipped 10 hours before lockdown, born healthy (had humidiy issues but with wet microwaved wash clothes was able to control and get to 60%+, though I helped him out of the shell 9 hours after he zipped) My second bird who started zipping yesterday morning, hatched by himself around 12 noon, 6/10. The baby was born with a bloody hernia, with a piece of shell attached, trailing behind it, I left in the bator until the bird was dry, as it flopped around half alive for about 8 hours. He seemed to be getting stronger though and the hernia started to dry up as well, so I moved him to the brooder with the first born. Now he has a piece of shell stuck to his butt, not blocking poop, but doing a good job catching it. Cleaned his butt once with warm water, better but piece of shell is stuck on good I am guessing to his umbilical cord. I tugged on it a little though not to hard, I mean I do not want to disembowel him. He is eating and drinking fine, though I had a little trouble getting the first one to figure out the food and water, (that however is another thread) Any help is appreciated, at this point I am waiting to see if it will fall off. It does not seem to be bothering him, he looks healthy otherwise. I still have 33 eggs lockdowned in the bator for day 21 tomorrow, not sure why these hatched early, and at this point not sure if any more will hatch... I never did candle all of the eggs. Thank you for your answers in advance. Marc

Leave the shell it will come off or the chicks will peck it off. when they first hatch they flop around like that it doesn't mean it was half dead. Chicks don't all hatch on the same day due to many factors I leave my hatched chicks in with the ones that haven't hatched yet, it encourages the others to hatch etc. plus if you keep opening your bator to take chicks out you will have humidity issues and that compromises the unhatched eggs. Chicks will not eat until thier yolk that is now in thier body has been absorbed and that can take awhile
