I've been reading up a lot on converting dog houses to chicken coops and saw some awesome ones on here. Could anyone give me specific advice for what I have to work with? It's about 4' x 3' and around 20" tall. I'm hoping to keep 4 hens at the most since I'm a newbie. They should be able to free range while we're around because our German shepherd keep most everything at bay. I've lived here for 10 years and haven't seen one raccoon anywhere, but we do have to watch out for possums and hawks.
I know I will need a nesting box (no idea how to build that) and I'm not sure what I will need to put the roof on hinges.
Whoever gave it to us put on a light fixture and carpet on the floor so I'd remove all of that of course.
I also plan on building a run but I don't have any chickens yet so I figure I'll take my time.
I am on a pretty tight budget (read: college student) so it won't be the prettiest hen house around.
Sorry about all the crud on/in it, it's kind of a junk box right now because our dog won't use it.
