Hello!

I have had a terrible year with my sebastopol goslings & hatching.
For context, I had 4/5 hatch with absolutely no problems last year.

First batch 1/5 hatched AND he took 72 hours + needed help. This second batch was superrrrr funky. Left for work in the morning and when I came home, one was fully out. No pips or anything before I left only a couple hours before. Had him and another hatch last night/early this morning.

Now here's my huge dilemma. I was checking the remaining three eggs tonight (because I'm super paranoid about throwing out an alive egg haha) and could feel a gosling kind of pushing against my hand and talking weakly.
Now he's got dried goo on him; mostly from the first guy not absorbing his yolk properly and the other one climbing over all the eggs last night. I'm worried that he won't be able to pip now.

Any tips or ideas on how I can help this little guy?
Thanks 💕

I've hatched several chicks so I'll try to help. It sounds like the baby has a bit of dried yolk in it's down, or membrane that didn't work loose as it hatched. I find olive oil works pretty well at removing both. Others use water to clean a chick, but I feel it dries too fast in these cases. I also prefer to use my fingers rather than a swab or cotton ball because I don't want the fibers getting stuck to the chick. If you can provide pictures I'll be able to help more.

First thing you want to make sure the chick's face and eyes are cleaned. If that doesn't take too long work on the wings and feet, that way it can start to move around and clean itself. Go slow, work on small patches at a time then put in back in the incubator to warm up, wait an hour or so and repeat as necessary. Use small amounts of olive oil, you don't want saturate the baby in oil, just thin application to loosen the yolk/membrane.

Increasing the humidity a bit in the incubator might help as well, but it'll take longer to dry off, but it should be ok since the incubator is warm.

It's past midnight here, but I'll check back in the morning to see how things are going. Good luck.
