i have a six day old chick with some serious constipation, bulging vent. We gave her several warms baths and a lot did come out. But she still looks swollen. i am having problems with pasty butt with a number of the chicks in this batch. i have read molasses in the water helps with constipation. But then read that is a bad idea, that apple cider vinegar with the mother in it works better.

i have my husband off to Trader Joes to find molasses and hopefully the ACV with the mother (not even sure they carry that). Can someone help me with input on which is better, and then how much to put in a quart waterer.

Thanks for your time to read this and offer any advice you might have.

I would go with the ACV if you can find it. I`m afraid the molasses would increase the problem with the pasty butt. Try a vew drops- of oil in the mouth of the constipated one and keep up the warm baths.

Thank you so much for your input. My husband could not find molasses, so he got the ACV and i put that in the water. We don't have cod liver oil. i should probably buy some to have on hand. i did drip some olive oil laced water in her mouth a bit ago, too. She is continuing to poop. i hope this solves it. We do have quite a number of pasty butts in this batch, and then a super weak chick i've had to isolate. Argh!

i found a post that suggested the soy in the chick feed might be hard on their stomachs when they're little. i put some chopped up hard boiled eggs in with them all. The healthiest chicks i've ever had were raised by one of my broodies. They ate what she ate, which was the hard boiled eggs, cucumber, soft canned peas. They didn't touch the chicken feed much until they were about a week old.
