Our goose was laying on our ducks eggs. She hatched 2. Our ducks lay daily so she went into nest and laid on more. We let her and we added a couple eggs each day. After 3 wks it got to hot and she didn't want to layon them any more so we brought them in, candled and incubated the good eggs. 2 ddays ago one of the eggs was cracked so we figured it was hatching. It has been about 50 hrs since we noticed it was cracked and now it is cracking around in a circle. I have it set up so i can put a flash light next to egg and see inside and there is alot of movement but no duckling. It has been 4 wks since she sat on the first eggs. I am worried about the duckling. The crack does not have a hole. Will the duckling be ok? Is this normal? This is our first time incubating eggs. The baby that our goose hatched is doing just fine . W ee had one die on us. The male duck killed it and tried to kill the one we have left so we had to seperate the ducks from the geese. The duckling is doing just fine now and we are excited to have more. Please if anyone knows what we can do we would greatly appreciate the help.

Thanks
Angie

Well we have a 2nd egg hatching and this one has made a hole and is chipping away. It isn't having any problems getting out. Oh please someone tell me what i should do to help the other one. I don't know if I should try to get it out or if i should leave it. I don't want to lose it.

Hi!

Ok, day 28 is when they really get started, not complete hatch. It is totally normal for an egg to take 3 days to get done hatching. The fact that it is unzipping (makeing that crack around) is very positive. Baby ducks and geese both are notorious for being slow to hatch. They work a little while, then sleep a long time sometimes. I think its fine. Make sure you have your humidity up to 75% or more for waterfowl hatches. The importnat part here is to be far mor patient than you want to be, and understand that most will make it out on their own unassisted. Don't interefere, or open the bator a lot to peek at them. Leave them to hatch, and you'll soon be rewarded!

I'll check back on your progress, and you can PM me with troubles, if you have any. I'll be on late, so you won't really be alone! If you want, come to The Thread Formerly known as Hatch Day is Today, where most of us hatch waterfowl.

Update please...

Well the egg I am worried about has had no progress it has now been about 76 hrs since first crack and the progress of cracking all the way around has stopped it is only half way and that stopped about 48 hrs ago. The good news is that there is movement inside the egg.

We do have one baby . The other egg that pipped was laying in just its bottom shell about 3 hrs after first crack. It wanted out cause as soon as it was it slept in the shell all night. Woke me up a few times squaking. It still looks wet and hasnt opened its eyes yet. It dicarded the shell about an hr ago and fell back to sleep.

When will it get fluffy and run around? The kids are bugging cause I can't give them an answer, they r driving me nuts, worse than worring about the egg.

If you have the brooder box with the soft non-slip towel or rags in the bottem, and the temp is up in the 90s, you may move the new baby into it. Tell the kids its a newborn, and that they must not pick it up or touch it without your say so. (They are naughty, and will leap from little hands to their doom if they whack the floor) Once he's dry and running about and peeping all the time, let them have a gentle go with him on the floor if they want. No green snacks (kale, lettuce, or spinach only) until 1 week old (and then, add grit).

I would expect slow hatch to get a move on soon, but you maybe can go ahead and find his beak area (by candling) then open a tiny little whole (2-3 mm accross) near there, so he can get lots of fresh air, and make him work until tonight. IF still no more progress, I will PM you to guide you with an assisted hatch. That is the last option, though, as its tricky, and easy to break a vein. They usually don't try to get out until they'be absorbed the yolk and blood. They know if they go too soon, its bad.
