We've got a flock of 8 and thank God only one (that we know of, confirmed, so far) has worms. We have been giving them yogurt to help with probiotics (as well as electrolytes and probiotics in their water) since we found out until we could get to the store for Safeguard. We are deworming all of them with the Safeguard (starting today) in their communal water as they all share a [big enough] space. They get minimal treats (dried mealworms maybe every other day?), they aren't bored as they have a hanging ball of cabbage/lettuce/cauliflower, radio, two roosting bars, and three nesting boxes. Eggs are collected daily and production has increased to 7-8 daily now that the sun is out for longer.

We live in northern MN and have to use the deep litter method for warmth. We use a rake as a chicken pooper scooper on the daily, but I'm looking for advice to see how you all might help with a cleaner coop. I/we work 14 hour days at least three days per week, so being there 24/7 isn't an option. It's been humid lately and the coop is vented well enough. We thought they were clean enough but obviously it wasn't. We've had them a month or two. What are we doing wrong that poor girl got sick with the yuckies? 😞

1) Cleaner poop/coop ideas? What about when giving Safeguard? How do we keep from re-infestation, or eating their poop and re-infesting themselves?

2) Safeguard egg withdrawal? 7 days? I've read there is none, 7 days, 10 days? Should I just error on the safe side?

3) How much pine shavings should I put down when I put down a new layer? We deep clean it monthly, with daily light poop cleanings, and then now since we found out it's yucky, been taking all poops out. Are we cleaning it too much? We know the poops are good for it to create good bacteria... is that why most of them are not sick with the yucks? Any ideas on cleaning with the deep litter method.

I've done TONS of research but none gives specifics for what I’m asking or I've just missed it. This is our first batch of chickens so we're learning as we go. Please be gentle. Any and all advice welcome! 😁 Help!

Chickens get worms. Just deworm every quarter and follow the instructions on the label.

Clean your coop of poop every week. The deep litter method is fine, leave your chooks to turn or turn yourself, and make sure there's no buildup on their roosts etc.

If you get rats/rodents, wild birds, etc in your coop/run, they'll bring things like worms. It doesn't really have anything to do with a dirty coop -- worms don't just spontaneously appear, something has to bring them/their eggs.

If you're not selling your eggs and are only using them for your own consumption, just eat them. Safeguard won't harm you (unless you're deathly allergic), so I wouldn't stress about withholding periods.

I was wondering about withholding period. All the things I read keep saying 14 day withdrawal from second dose. I’m like, what about withdrawal from the first dose??? Doesn’t that matter?! 😂

@casportpony ? I don't think safeguard is water soluble.
I gave each bird a dose instead of through water. It is not soluable, no, but some were saying it is more “flock” effective (meaning time effective for multiple birds). I only have 8 girls so it wasn’t terribly time consuming.

14 days after last treatment.
That means if you give medication 1 day, then repeat in 10 days it would be 1+10+14=25days

If you have confirmation of worms through your vet, they really should have been able to give you instructions and information about worming the chickens too. What type of worms did the vet find?

What dosage of Fenbendazole did you give? Fenbendazole in low dosages is approved for use in poultry. So...do a bit more reading up about egg withdrawals on that - make a determination whether you need to adhere to a withdrawal - that's up to you.

There were capillary yuckies! 🤢 We we’re instructed to give 1.25 to each bird (instead of through the water) on day 1 and repeat in 10 days.

I’ve heard there is no withdrawal, but then have seen that there is. I’m conflicted because I don’t want to waste the eggs if I don’t have to. 😞

So every bird you have weighs 5lbs?
I would re-ask the vet about withdrawal periods and if the 1 dose and repeat in 10 days will take care of Capillary Worms.

My understanding is for Capillary Worms Fenbendazole needs to be given for 5 days in a row. Dosage at 0.23ml per pound of weight.

The local vet doesn’t specialize in aviary and unfortunately we don’t have anything close. We didn’t give a dose yesterday. Will that wreck their dosages? I can start again today! They are all about 5lb, yes, give or take a few ounces.

I doubt it would wreck their doses, if you are wanting to give for 5 days, then just give for 4 more.
