Hey, I have my first two chicks and am trying to sex them. I've read that you can tell the sex of Polish chicks by their crests, I'm convinced that one is definitely a girl but would love to have your thoughts. They are 2 days old, would it be best to wait a couple of days or can we tell now. My daughter is anxious as I've said that if one is a rooster we wont be able to keep them because of the neighbours. What are your thoughts? Here are some pictures of them!

Crest sexing can only be done as the crests feather in. Generally cockerels will have a spikey disheveled sort of look whereas pullets will have fuller more rounded crests. Sorry, you'll have to wait to know the gender of your chicks.

I have heard some swear by the crest to sex polish-saying Mohawks are boys and bonnets are girls... but I have a little buff ‘Mohawk’ chick that is 5-6 weeks old and is showing no signs of waddles or pink/red comb and by her personality I am 90% sure she is indeed a she and not a he. I read another post from a polish breeder who also said crest sexing is not a good way to predict gender. It said around 4 weeks red lines will appear where waddles are coming in if it’s a cockerel. And the comb area gets really pink in cockerels. I will try to find the link and share it.

Thank you, that's great. Will just have to wait and see. I have read that you can tell by the feathers on the wings, not sure whether this is for all breeds? 😊

I am always a failure at the wing test. Lol! But here is mine at 6 weeks.... ‘she’ (I hope it’s a she anyway!) ) has a pointy Mohawk crest-but look at her comb- very pale. If this changes at 4-5 weeks to hot pink, you likely have a cockerel. That’s what I read anyway🤷🏼‍♀️

Just for comparison, look at this one from another thread. This clearly shows the difference in comb color. But this one has a rounder crest. So I just thinks crests can be deceiving!

Aw so cute, love the mohawk. Can't wait for ours to have more features, but loving their little chickie ways at the moment, love watching them. The way they fall asleep is so sweet😊

We laugh at how ours just falls asleep so fast.... like she has narcolepsy or something! Ha! One minute alert and chirping, next minute head is falling and sound asleep! So funny. Ours isn’t the smartest chick but she is also the sweetest! Enjoy! They keep getting more fun as they grow!
