I have a momma silkie that went broody about 20 days ago. I’ve sat with her daily making sure she’s happy and healthy. Today, day 20 she moved from the eggs so I looked to see if I seen a pip in any of them. 1 looked crushed, and one looked cracked and the others when I placed my light on them (without moving) didn’t have movement. I noticed when she got off an the silkies were beating up on the Brahma bantam (including her). I seen him try and step in her nesting box too and I gave him a little pop on the bottom for poking around on her eggs. Do you think this is a failed hatch? Should I wait longer? Is it ok to pick them up and candle them? I see a couple with blood vessels but a large hallow area.
I’ve never had a broody hen before.

I’m not experienced with this, but if it’s day 20 and there is no movement, I think the hatch was unsuccessful.

If she’s still broody, wait another couple of days. Make sure none of the hens can disturb her or get in the nest box with her. Disturbances like this can cause a failed hatch, which is why people often separate broody hens if they want a hatch. They might be alive still, mine didn’t move much the day before they hatched as they were getting too big. They might not all be viable, but give the a couple more days in case a few make it. It’s best not to fool around with the eggs too much so close to hatch.

I would wait. I had an chick hatch on day 29. It was in the incubator, but nonetheless if the eggs are under the broody there is a good chance some may hatch.
