HELP!

I went out to the coop this morning and she was fine but I just went out again I saw fresh blood so I found her and brought her inside to keep her from the other chickens. She had an odd poop and I can’t tell what her wound is. She also just “squatted” for me for the first time but still no egg from her.

Also when I picked her up to bring her inside she like drooled, almost like she was throwing up. I only noticed it though because I looked at her she wasn’t visibly puking…

So I think the poop is normal and that I am overthinking because of the blood. What do I do about the wound? Some bacitracin…? Can she go back in the coop?

I can’t get a good picture but I rinsed the wound and it’s a pretty serious gash and I have no clue how it would have happened. Do I keep her separated until it heals?

I had a similar cut with one of my chickens but it was under the wing and didn’t notice it until later I don’t know how because it was pretty deep you can get veterycin spray which seems to help but would definitely keep her separated

Yes bacitracin or plain Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment twice daily are good for wounds. Chlorhexidene (Hibiclens) and water or Vetericyn are good for cleaning the wound initially. What breeds are your chickens? She looks like a wyandotte. Those in my flock were the more aggressive chickens. Since they have pecked near her tail and vent, I would keep her separated in a wire dog crate with food and water for a day or two. BluKote can be applied to hide the wound when you add her back. But I would spend time with them to see what is happening. Do you have plenty of room for them, and are they getting outside into the yard to free range? Are you feeding 16-20% protein feed?

As for poops, I see a mushy normal one and a normal cecal poop. Is she doing okay today?

Thank you for the reply! I ended up taking her to the vet and she had a broken tail feather. I have never seen that happen before so the amount of blood shocked me.

she is a Wyandotte! I also have two buff rocks and two whiting true blues. They are all the same age and all coming into lay so the vet and I think their hormones are just kind of going crazy right now! They’re fed organic layer feed and they also have a dish of baked egg shells and they also have grit and they go in the yard maybe once a week to free range. Their coop is 72 square feet!

I’m not sure how the feather broke but the blood definitely attracted pecking. She’s still inside but I’m going to try and move her back out today! I can also feel a lot of other feathers coming in and she keeps itching back there so hopefully no other ones break

She actually broke a tail feather! Which explains why I could find a cut but there was sooo much blood. Once the blood stopped I found the hollow feather shaft.

We went to the vet yesterday and it was indeed a broke tail feather! She’s still in the chicken hospital inside my house but I think she’ll go back out tomorrow.
