Hi I have a year old rooster and something really strange has been happening he out of no where falls from where he sleeps and he starts twisting his neck upwards and is not able to stand and he gets all stiff but when I pick him up he goes back to normal in a couple of seconds. I’m starting to get really worried because it has happened twice on separate days. He is eating and drinking normally. His poop is normal as well. I just don’t know what to do.

Hi, and welcome to BYC! Sorry it's on bad circumstances though.

Your rooster might be developing wry neck, or having a neurological problem, or just a vitamin deficiency.

I would get some human Vit E, around 400IU, if you don't have any, and twice a day put one of those in his beak. He'll swallow it. Follow up with some scrambled eggs as that helps him absorb the Vit E.

Also, B-Complex, once a day. That, too, is the human version of B-Complex, and if he's not a bantam breed, you could give him half of one of those per day. If bantam/silkie, give 1/3.

I would also put Poultry Cell in all of their water every other day for a couple of weeks, in case it's a vitamin deficiency and any of your others might be suffering from it but not showing it yet.

Hopefully, this will help him and you should start seeing improvements. I would give him both the E and the B-complex for at least two weeks, but continue with the Poultry Cell.

Hi,
Is there a specific brand that I need to get for the Vit E and B-complex. Also I was doing some research and some people do Vit E and selenium? Do you think I should get that too?

Welcome to BYC! Keep us posted how your rooster is doing!

Brand doesn't matter, go with the store brand or no-name ones that are cheaper if you want.

No selenium needed as the scrambled eggs have enough selenium in them. That's why eggs or tuna are suggested to follow up with the E. Poultry Cell vitamins also has selenium in it. They only need a little bit of it to help the E.

You can get generic vitamin B complex for about $8 at Walmart, Spring Valley brand, I believe. The vitamin E is usually in soft gels, and 400 IU is the dose most give. Egg, tuna, and sunflower seed have selenium. You don’t want to give too much selenium.

Does he seem to be having a seizure or is this just just occasional? He could have suffered a head injury, have a vitamin E or thiamine deficiency, but sometimes they can have wry neck with certain illnesses, such as Mareks, Newcastles disease or avian influenza. Those usually cause more serious symptoms though.
