I have stumbled across this site while in search for answers for my own avian inspired problem. My husband and I have one remaining white adult male goose. We are pretty attached to it especially after loosing his mate last year. We have a pond with two other small ducks who have all sadly lost their mates. He is fairly sure it is a possum or raccoon getting our babies. Anyway, the other day he discovered our goose in the pond unable to lift his head with what looks like bite marks and dried blood on his neck. We brought him home, tried to clean him up some without moving his neck too much. He has not eaten since Sunday but he is able to lift his head now. We have him inside with us in a large dog kennel. He has barely slept and we literally had to force him to lie down tonight. He looks exhausted and will lay his head down on its side and close his eyes. I have been reading all your post and wondering what you might recommend we could try. We desperatly want to save him.

Is there any possible way you could take him to a vet? It seems like it's more at that stage. Are there any open wounds? Are you sure it wasn't a snapper?

so sorry to hear

. I really can't offer you any suggestions since I'm new to geese, but you have my support. Hopefully you'll find an avian vet nearby, or at least a general practitioner.

Well he called a few around the area and no one could help us but he contacted a lady who raises geese and she suggested time and we keep him safe. We finally got him to lie down last night by my husband rubbing his back. He seems to really like my husband and trust him. I let him out of the cage this morning and he was walking around and drinking water but still not eating. He has two gashes around his neck which i am putting antibiotic ointment on to try to prevent infection. We really arent sure what got him or even when it happened. We are just glad we found him in time...hopefully!

Unless you find an avian vet, all you can do is keep him safe and make sure he rests, eats, and drinks. Keep the wounds clean and watch for infection. I would probably keep some Neosporin or some puff-on wound powder (made for horses) on the wounds and I'd start him on antibiotic if they start to look infected.

Whatever got him and all the missing ducks will be back to finish eating him as soon as you put him back out on the pond. I am certain you are also going to lose the 2 ducks left out there.

Thanks. Yeah we were pretty sure whatever it was would be back to finish him off. So we are very glad that we found him when he did. We cant believe that he got away. Any suggestions on what to feed him. I have tried corn and some lettuce this morning. Even some small dog food which he usually loves. All with no luck. Poor little guy looks exhausted.
