I'm just starting. All I have so is a very large tree producing heaps of dead leaf mulch and no grass. I plan to get a dozen star pickets and tie chicken wire to it. I have a brickies wheel barrow that is far too heavy for me. I plan to put a nice bed in the barrow and erect a roof to house the barrow under the tree. I'm thinking two birds to start with. During the day they can have the run of the yard with my two Maltese dogs. Any thoughts on my plans?

I would suggest fencing off the area with something a bit stronger than chicken wire, if you have predators in your area. Apart from that it sounds good. What type of tree have you got there?

! Happy to have you with us! I agree with Sumi - fencing will give you peace of mind and do a better job protecting your birds. Good luck to you!

from New Mexico!

Be careful with your Maltese dogs.I have a Maltese and as tiny as he is, he would love to chase after my chickens. He sure barks up a storm and it is instinctual for dogs to go after chickens. Large dogs can kill chickens. So be careful. :-)

Great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!

small dogs can easily kill chicks. They like to chase them and as soon as the chick stops chirping, they will go and maul another one.

Thank you all of you for your encouraging words and advice. The tree is about 10 meters high Lily Pilly. I live in Brisbane Queensland. What sort of chickens are good layers
