Just a quick question,
I recently (Wednesday night) put a set of eggs (11) into lock down, on Thursday Morning I noticed my first pip, excited that one had gone early I didn't really pay much attention except to notice the little beak poking out every once in a while. since then 7 other chicks have pipped and hatched, that one is still sitting inside just chirping and moving its beak. When do you step in? How long can they last this way? What harm can I do now if I did help? I really want this egg especially to hatch as it is the only one of this breed to make it to lockdown. Any help and recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks

If it pipped on Thursday then I would say that you can help at this point, but first go to articles and read Guide to Assisted Hatch for All Poultry by Pyxis.

I agree :goodpost:
But be VERY careful because this chick may just be taking an extra long time to absorb the yolk. Don’t ruch into it either. If the chick is getting air there shouldn’t be too much of a rush. She won’t die from lack of oxygen at this point. Good luck with your chick! Update us on how she is!

Thank you both, I checked out the post referenced above and then began, the coconut oil and some warm water and q-tips did the job. She was extremely shrink wrapped with a large portion of the membrane holding her wing to her head. Then some hot pad and small heater time to get warm again. This morning she moved to the brooder and is doing fine, quite the bit of spunk in her. She is quite a bit smaller than the others but I'm going to take her off on her own 2 times daily for food and water to make sure she catches up.

Funny guess I subconsciously want this chick to be a hen and stick around for a while.

Yay!! Congratulations! You did great!
Do you have any pictures? What breed(s)

So I ended up helping two out, one was being picked on while zipping and quit then got shrink wrapped to. still not sure how that happens when others are hatching fine at the same exact times. The first is an olive egger the only one of seven set to make it to lockdown. The second is a gold laced wyandotte 1 of 9 to hatch of 12, not sure how it's gonna do since being born it seemed to have an abnormality on its neck and is definitely more sluggish than its' siblings, but it seems to be getting stronger all the time so who knows.
