A 2.5 year old Rhode Island Red hen is acting as though she is egg bound. Losing balance, squeezing motion from the vent, over active tail feather waving, etc. We have experienced this before with another in the flock and successfully extracted the yolk and shell and the hen lived. In this new case, I cannot feel an egg that is trapped. Using exam gloves and lubricant, I've been able to insert my index finger to the knuckle and never felt an egg.

What else could this hen be experiencing? Thoughts and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

She may be having a reproductive problem such as salpingitis and internal laying. There may be masses of egg material inside her oviduct or inside the abdomen. Do you know when she last laid an egg? Do you have a vet that might help you?

I'm pretty sure she probably laid a normal egg either the day before or very recently. We do have a vet for our ducks but the chickens are not on the same health care plan.☹
