today one of our hens started to act strange. she sets in the nest box for a while (on 3 golfballs) then got up and forged around and goes back to the box. we have also caught her in with out week old chicks in their run twice today (the gate on their run is about 3 feet tall). she wasn't pecking at them but acted like she was checking on them. she also seems to be checking on our 5 week old chicks that are in the big chicken run. they have a box with their feed water and perch. the door is too small for the big chickens to get in to them.
but anyway. is this the first signs of the maternal instinct kicking in, or is it something else?
