That's great!I actually just checked and her vent went BACK IN! I didn't know it was possible for a prolapsed vent to heal on its own but apparently it did.
OkayThat's great!
I'd keep watch on her for a few days, but if it's back in and she's doing o.k., I'd slowly start re-integration and see how it goes.
You may need to do this for short periods of time at first, then longer. Just observe her and your flock.
How’s is Your henOne of my hens got attacked by a hawk about an hour ago. Took her into the house and shut the others into the coop because the hawk is srill circling around. Her neck was bleeding but I cleaned and sanitized the wound. Then about 10 minutes ago we found another wound near her oil gland and the skin is all ripped open. Her vent seems veey swollen (there's either a giant blood clot or vebt prolapse I can't tell which). She's alert but doesn't move.
They sure are. My grown nephew brought a baby to me once that had a broken leg from a horse stepping on it. I cleaned it, then stented the leg. After I left, my nephew texted me later, that the chick healed. I was so happy.I would do soaks at least once a day, perhaps the swelling will go down and you can assess the vent area a little more. Unless you plan to take her to a vet for some sort of formal treatment, I would definitely keep the wounds clean and her inside. An antiseptic spray like Vetericyn applied twice a day would probably be useful, too. Some electrolytes in her water may help her perk up, too, but have fresh water available, also. Lots of protein for healing. Our chicken got attacked by one of the dogs and I spent all my time carousing many postings on here of (in my opinion) severe chicken-being-attacked injuries. I’m always amazed because most seem to make great recoveries, even when the injuries are just gut wrenching. Chickens are amazing healers. I hope your lady makes a fast and full recovery. Dang hawks![]()
I heard the same thing about blacchickens but no longer believe it. Yesterday my roosters were doing their panic call I ran outside just in time to see the hawk dive down and break my black Jersey Giants. neck.Fortunately we haven’t had to deal with hawks up close and personal yet. Your experience is valid and insightful, great advice. The theory with black chickens is that they mistake them for crows, a natural enemy of a hawk, supposedly. Not sure on the accuracy of that, though. Agreed, the only way to deter for sure is keeping them locked up safe!
So sorry to hear this. Heartbreaking. My condolencesI heard the same thing about blacchickens but no longer believe it. Yesterday my roosters were doing their panic call I ran outside just in time to see the hawk dive down and break my black Jersey Giants. neck.
