Hello

My 2 and a half year old Ex battery hen Olive is bleeding and has discharge coming out of her vent. Yesterday we noticed a large and rough egg with blood on it, didnt knows who it was. Today I came out with some meal worms for the hens and Olive wasnt moving from her spot. I picked her up and saw stringy discharge (white in colour) and blood around her vent. This morning I noticed a broken egg in the coop too. Ive given her a warm epson salt bath and some vitamins. I cleaned her vent and cant see much in the vent apart from some poo. Shes now in our hospital bay (dog cage) and shes just standing there with her eyes shut and head down. She has had some meal worms, some food and water but I can see she is straining and her vent is contracting. I dont know whats wrong with her and im not sure what to do. She had a history of egg laying problems and inflammatory peritonitis. She was fine this morning but not well this afternoon. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated xx

"She has a history of egg laying problems and inflammatory peritonitis", that is likely what's going on again. You can do a round of antibiotics, if you've treated her before with them then I'd use the same as last time. Birds that get peritonitis, EYP, it's often a recurring thing because whatever the underlying condition is, is still there. Reproductive problems are not uncommon, especially over the age of two. If an egg broke inside her, then that is prime for bacterial growth and infection, so antibiotics. If she's having difficulty passing an egg then a calcium supplement can help with contractions to help her push it out. A calcium citrate +D tablet once a day, or if you have tums on hand, a couple of those can work also.

Hello, thank you for your response. Shes had this twice before and has been taken to the vets, they took a sample and found on both occasions its only inflammatory peritonitis. So she was treated with Meloxicam and worked both times. Shes never had antibiotics before and could only get it from the vets. Ive started her on meloxicam, vitamin drops, calcium liquid, and some powered egg support but shes not impeoving.

I am sorry that she is not improving.

Taking into account her history of recurring reproductive issues and her age, I would consider putting her out of her misery. Somestimes there is just nothing else one can do for them.

Hello, thank you for your reponse. I just tried to call the vet and the chicken vet cant see her till next monday. Shes just eaten some scrambled egg and shes just drank some water. Ive cleaned her vent again, no more blood just some discharge but not a lot. Just have to see how she gets on through out the night. Ive juat given her another small dose of pain relief, I just dont want her to be in pain xx

They hide things very well, so it's often very difficult to know if they are in pain or not, or the level of discomfort. Usually if they are acting like they don't feel good, then they are probably very ill. If she's able to pass anything, then she may perk up some after that. Amoxicillin is pretty safe and well tolerated, you can get that without a prescription as fish mox at many online sources. That might buy her time until you can see the vet. The dose would be 57mg orally per pound of weight, twice a day for 5 days. I have on occasion given more than that and it was well tolerated.

Thank you so much for this, I am willing to try anything for her. Ive been having a look online but cant find anything relating to fish mox. Would you happen to know a brand or a website?? Thank you again

Looks like Aqua-Mox is what is available now. I've heard that some Tractor Supply stores are carrying it now, mine does not. Might be worth a phone call to ask. Here are a couple of sources online:

Thank you so much, your amazing. Ive actually just found a pack of amoxicillin I was given but never took. They are 500mg capsules, would this work if I weigh her and try and give the right dose?x

Yes you can use those. Just divide them into the correct dosage. I buy the 500mg fish antibiotics and do that. I empty the capsules so that I can divide into the doses I need, based on the weight of the bird. I mix them in a small bit of soft (not liquid) coconut oil and freeze them on wax paper or parchement. Then I have custom pills that go down easy. Just keep them in the freezer til ready to use. If they're too big you can break the coconut wafers or blobs into smaller pieces and give. Most birds like coconut oil, so they go down easy.
