So...I heard my girl Ethel screeching and came to the coop to find that Ethel had been pecked all over her head. Nothing is open, just scrapes and swollen parts. I had to get her out from under a shade spot to see her because she was pretty afraid. Then when I caught her I saw her face. I checked it out wondering if some illness had set in. I couldn't figure it out, until...I put her back down and saw her behaviour when Lucy, another hen came near her. Ethel puffed up and flapped her wings. Lucy stood tall, flapped her wings and freakin CROWED!!! She crowed TWICE!!. I know she's a hen because she lays. 🤔 They stood across an xpen from eachother eye-ing eachother up. Ethel kept herself separate and by me. Then I saw Lucy attempt to go after Ethel. I put Lucy in the xpen that I have up for my broody hen Cosmo (I guess she's just going to go through her entire broody process). And I have a separate part in the coop which Lucy will go in at night. The bully is in jail. 🤦‍♀️
I'm not sure why this is happening. They are hatch mates and have been great friends all along. Hence their names, Lucy and Ethel. They are just over a year and are ameraucanas.
The only thing I can think of is that Ethel has been doing the broody chirp sound for a few weeks, she is the lowest member of the flock but isn't beaten up by any means. Somehow that is bothering Lucy and setting her off. Ethel hasn't been acting broody as far as behaviour. She laid an egg today. It was oddly shaped but not terrible. So I'm a bit at a loss. 🤷‍♀️
Here is a video of the girls behaving adversely. I was hoping to catch Lucy crowing but I didn't. So don't mind my terrible crow. Haha!! And a few pics of Ethel's poor face.

I had a hen start crowing. Then she stopped laying. She was the top of the pecking order, and since I have no rooster, Blackie stepped in and not only crowed, but jumped on hens like she was mounting them. And she had one chicken, the Polish at the bottom of the pecking order, that she tormented to the point that the Polish wouldn't come out of the coop. I tried separating Blackie from the flock for a week, for longer. Nothing worked. I'd reintroduce her, and she'd attack the Polish. In the end, I gave away Blackie. Just couldn't handle the drama, plus she'd stopped laying.

Ugh...that's not so good. I'm really hoping for a better result. But I totally hear you. 🤦‍♀️

I'd read that if you separate the aggressive chicken away from the flock (best if they don't even see each other), then reintroduce, the separated chicken will have lost her spot as the top chicken. However, my Blackie quickly regained her spot. Since Blackie picked on my favorite chicken (the Polish) and I was not particularly fond of her, it wasn't all that hard to give her away. Whether she ended up in a pot or not, I don't want to know, but she had to go. She was a Minorca, a more aggressive breed than my others.

Have you considered bringing in a rooster? That might set her hormones straight.

I like the way you think. Lol. Mainly because I did have that thought. 😁 I have 13 chicks right now, half of them I'm keeping. They did come from a hatchery sexed but there is a chance there is a roo or two in the mix. So for once I'm hoping there is a roo. Lol.
