My special hen Boots (had to fix her crooked toes) seems to be a favorite of the rooster. My rooster is actually the sweetest thing, he doesn’t mate any of them too roughly and was the best behaving boy out of four. I guess he’s just inexperienced though and pulled too hard.

Two days ago I noticed a small cut on her head and a few missing feathers, I didn’t think much of it since the only other with a couple tufts missing is already growing pinfeathers in. But yesterday I noticed she had this big gash, (he must have pulled on the skin near the tiny cut opened it up) and immediately brought her indoors with a few calm friends. The little white bit is just skin, there’s no skull exposed or even that much flesh torn off.

I’m not too worried about her healing, since she’s a pretty healthy hen and the scalping isn’t as bad as most of the other pictures I’ve seen. I’ve put Neosporin on it and it’s scabbed over already.
I’m just wondering how fast she will heal, I don’t want to keep them from their dust baths and dandelions for too long!
