Hi, I have a hen, not sure exact age but she's under 1 and she lays eggs. I was giving her a bath (she needed one) and while drying her off I noticed a lump in her back hackle area. It's blue/purple, it's hard, and maybe about the size of a bug. When I touched it she didn't seem to be in pain but well, chickens can hide pain pretty well. She's bald in that area due to a scalping injury she's healing from. Any help is appreciated, please and thank you.

I’m wondering if that is a feather cyst @Wyorp Rock @Eggcessive ? With the feathers growing back from the scalping one (or a few) may have become ingrown. Let’s see what the others say, I do not have experience with feather cysts, but it seems fitting for the situation…
Yeah this is new skin (when I say scalping I mean it was really ripped off her head completely) so I'm really hoping it's just something ingrown

I agree, if this is where she was injured, then it may be an ingrown feather.

You can try releasing it. Take a sterilized razor blade or you may be able to do it with a needle, give a tiny cut just on the surface of the skin and see if you can tease out the feather. If there's pus, then you'll want to probably pluck the feather and clean that area with a little antiseptic.
