Weve had two Rhode Island reds that we raised from little chicks, born around August 1, 2008.
A couple of weeks ago, our neighbor left both chickens outside all night and a predator got one of them.
The other chicken survived. She had a few broken feathers but otherwise seemed okay, but
she wasnt laying, or only laying those collapsing eggs.
Weve upped her calcium, kept her from eating too many treats so shed have to eat her feed. Even got her a companion chicken.** Shes still only had one decent egg in two weeks.
One time I did see yolk on her head fathers. I assumed that she ate a shell-less egg.
Well, today I saw yolk on the other chickens head feathers, so now Im worried we have an egg-eating problem.
I haven't seen any signs of egg shell in the coop. I gave it a pretty thorough cleaning today so I could be sure and spot any egg shells that might show up.
Id appreciate hearing from anyone with more experience.
**the new hen is a bantam araucona, so it's very easy to tell that she is laying eggs and the RIR is not.
