:(FED ALL HENS, ROO AND TURKEY
THIS AM.... ALL WERE FINE...
THIS EVENING, WENT OUT TO FEED AND ONE HEN WAS LAYING DOWN.
I PICKED HER UP, HER BREAST AREA
SEEMED TO BE ENLARGED AND VERY, VERY SOFT.. AS I FELT HER
WATER BEGAN DRIPPING FROM HER
BEAK... I SET HER BACK DOWN TO
COME TO THE HOUSE TO CALL A
FRIEND TO ASK IF SHE HAD ANY IDEAS. UPON RETURNING TO THE BARN, MY HEN WAS DEAD..
HAS ANYONE EVER HAD THIS HAPPEN.. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT MAY HAVE CAUSED THIS..??

THANK YOU, RAEL

ok where are you from and what is the heat like there. I had one die like that and was told it was to hot to feed scratch to them.it was way to hot and heated up the chickens insides.

Hi Froggy,
Thank you for writing me.. It was in
the 90's today here in wheatland, wy.
All other hens are fine. I do feed them scratch. and if it is 90 degrees
outside, the barn, though shady gets
very, very hot....It was a fairly windy
day, too.

If her breast area was really soft I bet you were feeling her crop. Is it possible she had an impacted crop? You might want to provide grit to prevent that. Sorry for your hen but I don't know what would have killed her.

Do not feed scratch in hot weather... add electrolytes/vit to the waterer... offer fuit with high liquid content during the day such as watermelon...
