My Buff Orpington (Buffy) stopped layingand pretty much stays in the nesting box for I want to say about 4 days. She is about 14 months old, and is definitely over weight. The first thing that I noticed was a strange, distressed vocal noise whenever I entered the coop. That has mostly stopped. She keeps her feathers fluffed out, sometimes with wings spread out, sometimes appears itchy, scratching and pecking herself. Often she twitches also. Her breast is soft and symmetrical as is her abdomen. I don't feel any egg. She seems to have a bald spot on her abdomen between her legs but the sun is pink and clear. Her comb and wattles are red. I've been taking her out of the coop and giving her a home made electrolyte solution with a dropper. I don't know how much she is actually getting of it. She walks around pecking at the grass and eats a little bit out of the feeder then returns to the nesting box. She is passing a small amount of normal poop. She did have a large amount of poop stuck to her butt when this started but that isn't unusual for the hens in my flock.

Any ideas about what the problem is and what I may try to do about it? She isn't going to the vet. Thanks in advance for any ideas of suggestions!

She's gone broody, meaning she wants to sit on the eggs and hatch some chicks. Orpingtons are known for going broody frequently and make excellent mothers. Do you have a rooster? Do you want her to hatch chicks? If not, you'll need to break her off her broodiness. The best way to break her would be by putting her in broody jail.

Are you sure she's overweight? Buff Orpingtons are a very big and fluffy breed.

Well that's good news! So she isn't sick then? I have a large dog crate that I can jail her in. Not much room in the coop for it but it will have to go in there. I'm a little concerned about bears that have broken into the chicken yard a couple of times this week. They seem more interested in the food than the chickens but if they see her in the cage they will likely toss it around trying to get her. They can't get in the coop.

Nope, not sick! Just hormones.

Oh my, I hope your chickens stay safe from the bears.
