Hen is sleeping in nest box for no apparent reason

My solution if you have conventional nest boxes.View attachment 1543940. Gallon jugs of vinegar or washer fluid bottles wedged in each box an hour before sunset when I let them out to free range.
I leave all night because I open coop before sunrise. But you can remove after sunset when you lockup the coop.
I did this for two weeks for a older hen that decided to sleep in nests was a good thing, and it's been months since she has slept in nests. GC
good idea, i might try it, at the moment I'm just putting her on the roosts every night but this would be a lot easier.

Your ladder roosts are too low.
How many birds?
Might want to reconfigure your roosts.
The rafter roosts are too high(I suspect your coop is fairly small, tho I can't really tell from these pics).

I rigged a permanent hinged nest cover, easy to use and always there when I need it.
Close it up an hour before roost time, open back up when I lock up jut after dark.

I have four hens one rooster.
Yeah I've been trying to get my father to help me build new roosts for over a year now, it just hasn't happened yet it's not his priority.
yeah i know my roots are off, it's never been a problem though. I did not build my coop, i bought it from a friend who was moving away, it came with with the six birds she had, two turned out to be roos so now i only have five. Space isn't an issue i don't know the exact square footage (somewhere around forty square feet but i don't want to state that as fact it might be closer to thirty five) but i know the previous owner had sixteen birds in it at one point with no issues (i would never have sixteen birds in this coop personally i recognize that each bird needs four square feet of coop space).
As for my dysfunctional roosts (the bars are too close together as well) I've been trying to get my father or brother to build me new ones for close to a year now, I'm starting to get frustrated and am thinking about just figuring out how to do it myself.
And the rafters look very high, but my girls jump onto the piece of wood running over the roosts and jump to the rafters, they get down the same way they don't even need to flap their wings, they've roosted that way since they were very young i tried closing them off but the birds started trying to roost in trees so i opened them back up and haven't had a problem since.
I believe Rosie was allowed to roost in the boxes in her previous owners care, so that's two years. I think it's just a habit for her i need to break. I'm going to work on it in a week I'm leaving Friday and don't want to put more responsibility on my mother.
