On Saturday my hens eggs started hatching (yippee =) ) I have gone in and checked her each morning and she is still sitting firmly on that nest. I saw her wings being pushed around and heard some peeping but havent seen a chick or chicks. Last time she only hatched one healthy chick and then left the nest eager to show him off to the world. This time I cant get her to budge and she is pecking at me, protecting everyone I'm sure. She hasnt eaten or taken the chick(s) out, no food or water was touched. Im wondering how long she will sit there or when I need to start worrying about the chick(s) getting food and water?

***UPDATE July 15***
I happened to catch her off the nest when the other hen was trying to lay in the same box...we have one chick for sure, we lost one, he pipped but was definitely gone, his shell was dated for the 18th, but he hadnt been gone for long, it didnt smell at all. I've decided to leave her eggs after all, because it seems that several were peeping and once that started she jumped right back into her nest and I saw one egg move before she got back on.
***UPDATE July 17*** She has 2 chicks and seems like she is done, the last one hatched yesterday, I went ahead and candled the last of her eggs, I tossed 7 and left her with 4 questionable ones, which I'll pull in the next day or so..

If she were mine, I would try to get her off the nest sometime today so that she and the chicks could eat and drink.

Thanks! I was figuring on doing that this evening, and give her the whole day to decide on her own LOL and for fun I went and sat in there this morning and watched her talk and fluff around it/them but no little heads peeked out. I'm going to prepare her second nest with clean bedding so I can switch her/them over like I did last time.

Fingers-crossed that she hatched more than one this time =)

more than likely she will sit but if she doesnt and she hatches out another put them two under a heat lamp that is really close to them and here in a day or so if nothing more hatches get rid of the eggs and put the chicks back in with the mother but as the chicks hatch put them all under a heat lamp until a week has gone if no more hatch throw the eggs out. GOOD LUCK!
