Right now I heard a kerfuffle out in the run. 22:32 to be exact. 2 hours and 15 minutes after sunset. Pitch dark out. Lights on, grabbed flashlight and went to investigate.

Found a broken egg (laid by Goofy on the roost).

What is making her lay on the roost at night and how can I stop her from doing so?

Has she already been laying for a while, or is she younger and just starting?

Several of my young hens were clearly laying either in the night or very very early in the morning while still on the roost. As they got older, they've all "leveled out" and now mainly lay during normal daylight hours. (I have one who gets off the roost about 20 minutes before sunrise to go lay).

Is this the first time this has happened? Through the years I've found the occasional egg under the roost. If it's not a consistent thing, I wouldn't worry too much about it, especially if the egg seems normal.

Been laying about five months I think. Mostly in the nest, a few anywhere in the run or straight off the roost. Shells are really strong, so usually are just fine. This one seems to have landed smack on the edge of the ramp, which has a frame made of angle iron though.
