Hi, I have a hen that just won’t let me know what’s going on with her. I do not have a local vet that sees chickens anywhere near me so all care is up to me.
I have an almost 4 year old black sex link hen named Lemmy. Almost 2 weeks back I noticed she was a little slower than usual and isolating herself from the rest of the flock. She would either be in the nesting box, even overnight or in the coop facing a wall. I also noticed a couple of times she had a slight penguin stance. She also had some diarrhea that stuck to her bottom and her crop felt empty. No mites/lice and no signs of internal parasites. Chickens are on organic fermented feed and have fresh water available at all times.
I took Lemmy inside and began with a warm epsom salt bath. I checked her vent to see if she was egg bound and I felt no egg. I worried about egg yolk peritonitis but I have no way to diagnose that. I made an oregano and cinnamon water solution and she drank it. She also drank normal water. Her comb and wattle are red, eyes are clear and bright. Her breathing is normal. Her tail is up and her feathers are shiny and smooth. She does puff up her feathers from time to time.
After a few warm baths she stopped the penguin stance (within 24 hours of bringing her inside). Her poop was mostly urates with some yellow but after being inside it is now urates with a small amount of regular poop. She is drinking normally but lacking appetite. She eats a little of non-fermented feed and prefers grubs. She also eats carrot shreds a little. I have taken her outside on nicer days and she will forage and eat bugs and grass but she is slower than usual. All my other chickens are fine and have no issues.
I am unsure why she is lethargic and lacking appetite. Has anyone else dealt with this before? All help is appreciated. I am include a few photos of her. The first one she was just starting to bed down to peck the ground.
Thank you!
