Hen off eggs.

Hello my question is I have 5 eggs that are about to hatch (day 21 today) and momma got off the eggs and doesn't look like she is going to get back on how would I get the eggs to continue to hatch. I dont have an incubator.

Is there movement inside them? Maybe the eggs were bad or maybe she's just taking a break.

It's not terribly uncommon for the momma to take an extended time off the clutch immediately prior to the eggs hatching.

If she been off longer than an hr she knows something you don't. Candle the eggs and look for heartbeat. You will see a good sized vein and a beak breaking sac inside moving. Her getting off at day 21 tells me she was a broody hen who may have had a hen laying in same nest and she thought she laid them. Thats Starling behavior. Poor thing. Lets hope not.

At day 21, there should little pieces of egg shells falling around them. If she is young, I have had some that do a test run. She will try again.
