Hi,

I have a hen that started breathing with her mouth open a couple days ago. She's not making any noises, and no coughing. I isolated her and bought some VetRX which I used a little bit today. I just noticed her crop is kind of soft and squishy.

Any ideas on what I should do? Should I stop feeding her normal food?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

How old is she? Is she laying eggs? How do her droppings look? Feel her crop in the early morning to see if it is still squishy. Crops can become slow due to illness. If hers is still soft and squishy, try massaging it several times a day. Give her a tsp of plain yogurt daily for a while for probiotics. Smell her breath for a sour or foul odor. She may have a sour crop, but she may have something else going on.

She is not laying eggs yet, she is only about 5 months old.

Her crop is still squishy this morning. I will massage it.

I've been trying to give her yogurt but she doesn't seem to want it. Am I supposed to force feed her with a syringe or something?

Her droppings look pretty normal, although small.

You could try talking to your local vet and explain her condition, mine were doing that after the first few days I had them, probably because they slept in Their new nest box full of straw instead of on a perch, they gave me antibiotics to put in their water and they were fine after a couple of days. They were not drinking or eating either. A local breeder I took them to felt their crops and they were fine
