Hi,

I have six Dark Brahmas that are pecking on each other quite a lot lately. Mostly in and around the head. But last night when I went to close up, I saw one with it's eye shut and the hen next to it going for the other eye.

I moved the trouble maker to another roost and then checking on the victim, I noticed it had opened it's eye. With my flashlight it looked as though the eye was no longer there but could not tell for sure.

Happily this morning it seems that the eye is still there but looks pretty swollen.

I'm wondering if I should put some antibiotic around it to help fight any infection.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I just had a girl get her eye pecked until that side of her face was swollen and bloody. I didn't give antibiotics, I guess because I'm not a fan personally. I seperated the one who was being pecked until she was healed. I gave her Bach's Rescue Remedy for her stress, dropper fulls every few hours of Nutri-Drench mixed with sugar water for vitamins and electrolites, and a mash of hard boiled egg and yogurt. Oh, I washed the area with homemade saline solution, and then put some neosporin over the area.

Good luck, I really wish all chickens could just get along, let us know how she is doing~

Thanks for the reply.

I just checked on her again and she looks ok for the most part.

No blood I can see but what looks like a blood blister around the eye like a boxer. They eye itself is clear and shiny, seems to be seeing ok so guess we'll keep a watch on it for now.

Thanks again

we had a hen that we thought was going to lose her eye as well. we didn't do anything for her and hoped it would work itself out in the flock. it did and she is fine today, chickens can be so mean!

just checked her and there is a little puss and some bubbles at the front part of the eye. (tear duct ?)

I will get some saline and clean it out.

Not sure about using neosporin, it says do not use in eyes...

The neosporin is for the area around the eye if they have been pecking at her vent and head, not for eye

I think the cool tea sounds nice, I could use some on mine from the pollen allergies
