hen pecking egg's shell

What would cause a sitting hen to start removing the shell from her unhatched eggs? I have had to remove them from her to try to save their lives. By the way... I am so thankful I found this website.

depends.......... what day are they on? Sometimes when a hen thinks she has sat long enough she will open an egg to test it and see if its due. Also, if one pips she might open the egg to help it out. If they eggs are not due for a while then it could be that shes starving. Does she get off the nest? Do you have food and water that she can reach without getting up?
