Hen Pheasants

Can anyone describe the difference in appearance between Golden and Amhearst hens, other than the yellow legs. I have both about 4 months old and I'm not sure of the difference. Thanks

The amherst have thicker barring patterns, you may also see some whitish coloring in the belly area, goldens will have more of an orange tint and thinner lines (unless you have mutations - yellow, peach etc.), amherst tend to be generally a little lighter and less yellowish in color. It's all barely noticeable from afar but can be seen if you look closely. If you post close up pics, I may be able to tell.

My Amherst hens have an almost blue light colored skin around their eyes which is definitely different than the goldens at the same age.

Thanks for the info Tigerrrrlilly and Chicken Danz. The barring pattern on all the hens are the same and not really widely spaced. There isn't any white on the underside and I don't see any blue around the eyes. Judging from your info I'm pretty sure they are all Red Goldens. I'll have to purchase a couple of Amhearst hens before spring and I guess I can compare them to make sure. Thanks again.

A trick that has been used is to turn the pastic baskets strawberries come in at the store upside down over the eggs of species you want to keep seperate at lockdown. Then you can either legband the chicks to indicate species/breed or brood the seperate

I know you arent sure but if they have any purity at all in them those legs are going to be yellowish colored or grayish /blue by now. Otherwise someones sold you mixed birds. Sorry. Post pics of the birds and their legs and we can tell you quick
