I have 6 chicks that are almost three weeks old. They are currently inside in a comfy brooder. Today I bought a 1yr old buff Cochin (oh my, she is the calmest sweetest thing!). I brought her home, gave her a bath, nursed a wound she had on her back and discovered she has mites. I put her in the coop/run outside. How do I go about treating her for mites? There are pine shaving in the run, will mites live in the shavings? And how should I introduce the new hen to my babies? The babies usually go into the run on days that are warm (I'm in Georgia so right now the weather is great) but I don't want my chicks to get mites. I also feel sorry for my sweet new hen that's all by herself in the run. What do I do?

I went to my feed store and got some DE. Its kills mites on poultry and you litely dust your hens feathers with it and also sprinkle some in the pine shavings and nesting box. everytime you clean the run or coop sprinkle some. Don't introduce the babies to her until she is mite free.

Thanks so much! I'll get some today. I didn't even notice the mites until I was drying her off after her bath. She is so calm and docile and I'm hoping she will be sweet to the chicks. Thanks again for your help!

Ivomectin drops on the hen... twice

Poultry dust on all when put together (light dusting but fluffed in well)

DE sprinkled in the coop & pen

... but still... NO introductions until you have this under control!
