My hen is around 5 years old wynodotte. Recently has started screaming like when she poops. She does this for a few minutes on and off all day. She does poop and it stinks. It's smaller poops and several of them. She eats drinks great carries on fine other than that. I brought her in to wash her and check her out. There is a small bulge at her vent. It's soft but I'm sure that the problem. I bought mineral oil with hopes of lubricating if I can. She's not paying right now. Can someone tell me how or if I can lubricate her?

I have no idea, but now that I'm aware this can happen, I will be watching for it! I hope you can find the cause and I hope it is a relatively easy fix. Please update when you can, and maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in. @aart ?

I would give her a tsp of the mineral oil, not orally, since she could choke on that, but in a little scrambled egg or on some bread crumbs. Not much bread since that can be gummy, but something to get her to take it. Chilled coconut oil cut into tiny pieces for her to peck would also work. Try this once a day until she is pooping.

There may be a reason for her not pooping, such as not drinking enough water, inflammation of her cloaca, something blocking ner gizzard, or pressure inside her abdomen froma reproductive disorder. You might also lube a gloved finger, and feel inside her vent for a blockage. Salpingitis can cause egg/infection masses inside the abdomen to cause pressure.

I have her the mineral oil in treats late yesterday seems like she was some better with it this morning. I have her some a while ago. Well see how it goes. I think I'm going to give it til Thursday to see how the oil does. I will up date at the end of each day. Thanks so much!!

Does her lower belly between her legs feel swollen, spongy, or tight? Internal laying, water belly, or cancer can cause an enlarged abdomen. That puts pressure on the digestive organs which slows down motility. Does her crop feel empty this morning before she eats or drinks? It should if her crop is working normally.

I am fixing to go and check all of that, Shes not gotten any better. she seemed a little better after a little mineral oil but that doesn't seem to do any good now. she yelled on and off all day yesterday. she is worse yesterday and today. I have a vet that I am going to see tomorrow he wasn't in today. its hard to find a vet that sees chickens. its ridiculous that you cant find one close by. I was going to take her today but the vet I had taken some to before wanted me to take her somewhere else cause he doesn't know about chickens. he says they are complicated. anyway we are planning to go tomorrow. its going to be hard because she isn't one that I can handle much its just her personality
