Thank you! She is a Lavendar Orpington. I agree so much with the egg laying industry! I wish I could just have pet chickens that don’t lay eggs… well I guess that would roosters! lol! Maybe someday! Lilac is actually feeling better. The vet gave me a round of Excede and she has had a turn around! Her crop is emptying.. she is eating more and free ranging most of the day.. she even roosted last night. My hope is she continues to improve! I know most of the time it’s touch and go but just happy for her to be feeling better for the time being. Is she a Delaware? Our poor hens. The industry that has made them egg machines has wreaked havoc on their reproductive system and their livers. When a hen comes to an age to lay, their liver structure changes appreciably. If you combine this with the fact that the industry took a layer from laying only 10-15 eggs per YEAR (naturally) to 200-300 per year, heat stress, and diets high in energy (sugar); this makes a hen predisposed to Liver Hemorrhagic Disease (LHD). Also, white egg layers are twice as predisposed to LHD. You can add milk thistle and flax seed to their diet to lower the risks.
