Hello! About a 2 weeks ago, I let all my Moderns out to free range during the day, feeding them and penning them up at night. All was well. But about a week ago, my heart broke, as I believed my friendly, pretty, best show bird had been killed. I searched all over the property for over an hour, but could not find her. But I also couldn’t find any proof of an attack. Two days later, by some miracle, I spotted her running around in the garage amongst the other chickens. I was so relieved. I went to try and pick her up, so I could put her in a pen so she could eat and drink, but she did the weirdest thing! She is one of the only chickens I have that let me pick her up without incident. But when I went to pick her up, she squawked, (you have no use how long it just took me to figure out how to spell that :lau) and ran away. That’s when I realized she was broody! Ok, cool enough, but where’s the nest??

Long story short, I watched her for some time. She never returned to the nest, so maybe I was wrong? Well, that night she was gone again. Didn’t see her until 2 days ago. She was eating food out of the open pens. Watched her again, but still can’t find out where her nest is! I’m not sure what to do. I went out side to feed bread today, and she came barreling towards me from the water bowl. I don’t want her hatching these eggs, as there is a show coming up, and she needs to be in good non-broody condition. But now that it’s been over a week, I don’t want the eggs to just sit there and rot, wherever they are. She is getting quite skinny, and I’m afraid she hasn’t been eating enough or getting enough nutrients.
Any suggestions on how to keep her healthy? Or to find the nest? If I can find the nest, I can solve these problems! (Not sure whether to throw the eggs away though, as they would be from any of the roosters running around, or hatch them and just see if there’s any chance one of the Birchen tops fertilized an egg) But if I do find them and decide on keeping them, it would be much better o see if she will continue siting if I move her and the eggs into her pen, where she is protected and has paenty access to food and water.

Any ideas/help/suggestions would be great! Thank you so much for reading this, I know it’s kinda long!

Personally, I would leave her be. However, I don’t show birds, and they do get a bit tough looking, but pick up quickly once the hatch. I don’t think she will eat more in the coop, and often moving Brodie’s to where you think best, they don’t think best and abandon the nest and go back to their original nest.

I vote leave her and see what happens...or break her from being broody with a dip in cold water and placed in wire cage with no bedding.

Tough decisions.

If you want to find the nest, just set back and watch her, it may take 30 minutes or more, but she will show you where it is.
Moving may or may not work out, more often not.
Good luck!

If you'll watch from afar she will return to her nest on her own and you can see where she hid her nest. Don't press her.

I’ve tried watching her...she seems to know I want to find the nest. I watched her yesterday for a little less than an hour, and she never did/went any where. I turned my back for a minute or two to seperate two roosters who were fighting, and she was gone. This has happened multiple times. Once I was sure I had her, she went behind the mower, towards the garage door that was opened a crack for the birds and other animals to freely move in and out of the garage. Thinking she went outside I ran out, and she wasn’t out their, but I could hear her distant broody squawks, and went back in, and she was gone. I investigated the mower, but couldn’t find any place she might be sitting, unless she found a hole somewhere I can’t see.

OyVey!
Doesn't sound like she's giving you much choice,
hopefully she shows up in another week with a bunch of chicks.

Hopefully! Fingers crossed babies aren’t too entirely crossed/mixed up! Also, hope none are rotten...yuck!
