My broody chicken hen has been sitting on four peafowl eggs for 36 days. They apparently all have chicks in them...I never candled eggs before but gave it a try and it looks like the eggs have chicks in them, but the eggs don't move. Is there any chance that eggs will still hatch out after that long or is it a sure thing that the chicks just didn't - and won't hatch? Anyone???

The longest I have seen an egg incubate and still hatch is 32 days. If you are sure you counted the days right your eggs are dead. Open one carefully from the air sack and peek inside and see if there is movement. If you can't tell make the hole a bit larger so you can insert a finger and feel the chick.

I checked the eggs as you suggested. Only one actually had a developed chick but it was dead. I moved my hen (Madam Pompador) from her nest to another empty pen. She was not happy with me. I checked on her a few hours later and while she was still distressed she did start eating the chicken scratch and meal worms I brought her as a treat. Hopefully she will be back to normal soon. Thank you for your comments.

You are welcome.

My peahen Anastasia did not hatch out her clutch - 35 days she sat poor thing. The eggs did not develop properly. I removed them three days ago. My peacock Rainbow has been trying to mate with her but she does not seem interested. Is there a chance she will mate with him again and start laying another clutch since it is still in the middle of breeding season? Or is she probably fed up with it all for the year?
