I have a Black Astralorp hen and she started laying this month, but stopped the last three days. I have been reading that eggs can break inside her, so I stuck my oiled finger inside and found a few remnant shells. I noticed around the time she stopped laying that she was ejecting clear liquid out of her vent, which I thought was just diarrhea. There is some white residue in the feathers around her vent, but she is eating and drinking normally, free ranging and seems normal, high energy as before. Do hens just recover on their own or should I do something? I have read the threads about this, but the hens mentioned seemed sick, mine is fine. She lays on the nest each day like she is going to lay, but no egg. Feedback appreciated, thanks...new member here

Generally an egg breaking inside is an emergency in the making. I don't know what to tell you since she seems totally fine otherwise. You may want to post in detail at

"emergencies, diseases, injuries , cures," thread to see if they have any advice to offer you. I guess for now I would just monitor her condition closely.
